MRCC Turku is staffed around the clock by at least two people. One of them is a Search and Rescue Mission Co-ordinator, or SMC for short, the other works as an operator. The SMC can call for more operators if and when needed.
SMC:
- Is in charge of the on-going situation
- Evaluates the severity of the situation
- Decides which units should take part in the mission
- Decides on the termination of missions
Operator:
- Takes care of radio communication according to the SMC's instructions
- Ensures that all maritime emergency calls as well as other messages regarding maritime safety are taken in
- Alerts appropriate Search and Rescue units
- Maintains a situation picture throughout the mission
